1 In the beginning God created the heaven and the earth

Here we see three things that God has created. Time, space, and the earth. God created time(In the beginning), space (This is the space of heaven. The sun stars and moon will come on the fourth day) and the earth. In the original, the word for God was Elohim. This word means majesty, power. It comes from the root word, worthy of worship. This was plural. The trinity of God is shown here. But the word translated to "created" is singular.  The Trinity, as one, here created the heavens and earth. "Created" here means out of nothing. We say we create objects such as paintings, carvings. But we actually just change some material into another form. God has the power to create something from nothing.

2 And the earth was without form and void; and darkness was upon the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God moved upon the face of the waters.

"Without form" can be translated as confused, empty. We can see small examples of this today. People living without God in their life show the darkness, confusion, and emptiness in their existence.

3 And God said, Let there be light: and there was light.

Here is something, that without a knowledge of and faith in God, would be hard to understand. This would be light without a source that we can explain. Here in creation as in the work of grace in our hearts, the first thing necessary is light.

4 And God saw the light, that it was good: and God divided the light from the darkness.

God saw the light was good. God in His foreknowledge saw that the light would expel the darkness from the earth and our lives. From the start, God saw that the light and darkness would not have fellowship.

5 And God called the light Day, and the darkness he called Night. And the evening and the morning were the first day.

6 And God said, Let there be a firmament in the midst of the waters, and let it divide the waters from the waters.

Firmament is translated from the word raqia. Moses intended his readers to understand raqia simply as the sky above the Earth.

7 And God made the firmament, and divided the waters which were under the firmament from the waters which were above the firmament: and it was so.

8 And God called the firmament Heaven. And the evening and the morning were the second day.

At the end of the second day, God has not said anything about the work of the second day being good. It could be that the work that this accomplished wasn't completed until the third day. It could also be because of what will happen in II Peter, chapter 3 verse 7. "But by His word the present heavens and earth are being reserved for fire, kept for the day of judgment and destruction of ungodly men." Water is H2O. Two parts hydrogen, one part oxygen. Colossians, chapter 1, verse 17, says "He [Christ] is before all things, and in Him, all things hold together." When Christ removes his hand, is it possible the bond will break and the water will become a highly flammable gas?

9 And God said, Let the waters under the heaven be gathered together unto one place, and let the dry land appear: and it was so.

10 And God called the dry land Earth; and the gathering together of the waters called he Seas: and God saw that it was good.

11 And God said, Let the earth bring forth grass, the herb yielding seed, and the fruit tree yielding fruit after his kind, whose seed is in itself, upon the earth: and it was so.

12 And the earth brought forth grass, and herb yielding seed after his kind, and the tree yielding fruit, whose seed was in itself, after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

This says "tree yielding fruit". Only mature, grown trees yield fruit. When God made them they were mature and fully grown. The same as all God's creation. The old riddle" Which came first, the chicken or the egg?" falls apart here.

All creation was created at the age God determined it needed to be. Each animal and plant was created mature, an adult. Man was created  as an adult. And I think this may be what evolutionists have trouble with. They see what seems to be attributes that show earth to be millions of years old. But God could create an earth that appears to be that old with His word.

13 And the evening and the morning were the third day.

14 And God said, Let there be lights in the firmament of the heaven to divide the day from the night; and let them be for signs, and for seasons, and for days, and years:

15 And let them be for lights in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth: and it was so.

16 And God made two great lights; the greater light to rule the day, and the lesser light to rule the night: he made the stars also.

This could point to Jesus and Satan. Jesus, the greater light rules the day. Satan, the lesser light rules the night. 2 Corinthians 11:14 says, "And no wonder, for Satan himself masquerades as an angel of light." The moon, the lesser light, has no light of it's own. It only reflects (masquerades) the light from the sun. The stars could point to the angels. Revelation 12:4 says," His tail drew one-third of the stars of the sky, and threw them to the earth." When speaking about Satan falling to earth.

17 And God set them in the firmament of the heaven to give light upon the earth,

18 And to rule over the day and over the night, and to divide the light from the darkness: and God saw that it was good.

We have that light shining through our lives if our actions reflect the nature of Christ—His love, compassion, and forgiveness. His light shines through our attitudes, words, and deeds.

19 And the evening and the morning were the fourth day.

20 And God said, Let the waters bring forth abundantly the moving creature that hath life, and fowl that may fly above the earth in the open firmament of heaven.

21 And God created great whales, and every living creature that moveth, which the waters brought forth abundantly, after their kind, and every winged fowl after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

22 And God blessed them, saying, Be fruitful, and multiply, and fill the waters in the seas, and let fowl multiply in the earth.

23 And the evening and the morning were the fifth day.

24 And God said, Let the earth bring forth the living creature after his kind, cattle, and creeping thing, and beast of the earth after his kind: and it was so.

25 And God made the beast of the earth after his kind, and cattle after their kind, and every thing that creepeth upon the earth after his kind: and God saw that it was good.

26 And God said, Let us make man in our image, after our likeness: and let them have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over the cattle, and over all the earth, and over every creeping thing that creepeth upon the earth.

The image of God (Latin: imago dei) refers to the immaterial part of humanity. It sets human beings apart from the animal world, fits them for the dominion God intended them to have over the earth, and enables them to commune with their Maker. It is a likeness mentally, morally, and socially.

Mentally, humanity was created as a rational, volitional being. Humans can reason and choose. This reflects God’s intellect and freedom. Anytime someone invents a something, writes a something, paints a something, enjoys a sunrise, calculates a sum, or names a pet, he or she is showing that we are made in God’s image.

Morally, humanity was created in righteousness and perfect innocence, a reflection of God’s holiness. God saw all He had made (humanity included) and called it “very good”. Our conscience or “moral compass” is held over from that original state. Whenever someone writes a law, recoils from evil, praises good behavior, or feels guilty, he or she is confirming the fact that we are made in God’s own image.

Socially, humanity was created for fellowship. This reflects God's triune nature and His love. In Eden, humanity’s primary relationship was with God, and God made the first woman because “it is not good for the man to be alone”. Every time someone marries, makes a friend, hugs a child, or attends church, he or she is demonstrating the fact that we are made in the likeness of God.

Also, part of being made in God’s image is that Adam had the capacity to make free choices.

27 So God created man in his own image, in the image of God created he him; male and female created he them.

We see ourselves as rational beings. We are because God created us in his image. God by His nature is a rational being. He doesn't just operate by the laws of logic, He created them. He is not constrained by these laws because they are some kind of "higher force", but they are the natural outflow of His will; they are His nature. He is as much a rational being as He is a loving being. Because only man has the true capacity for rational thinking, he is in this way also made in God's image. Also, man is intelligent; aware of his surroundings and capable of changing them. He does not act on instinct, but should be able to control his natural drives for higher purposes. We have often heard people say that "rational, intelligent" people don't believe in God. We are rational and intelligent because we are created in His image.

28 And God blessed them, and God said unto them, Be fruitful, and multiply, and replenish the earth, and subdue it: and have dominion over the fish of the sea, and over the fowl of the air, and over every living thing that moveth upon the earth.

29 And God said, Behold, I have given you every herb bearing seed, which is upon the face of all the earth, and every tree, in the which is the fruit of a tree yielding seed; to you it shall be for meat.

30 And to every beast of the earth, and to every fowl of the air, and to every thing that creepeth upon the earth, wherein there is life, I have given every green herb for meat: and it was so.

All creatures created by God were vegetarians in the beginning. Even the big cats, bears. To eat meat would require death. Death wouldn't come until after the fall of man.

31 And God saw everything that he had made, and, behold, it was very good. And the evening and the morning were the sixth day.

In the beginning, the world was perfect. Morally and physically.
