Genesis Chapter 2
Music On/Off
The name used for God in chapter 1 is the Hebrew name “Elohim,” which is the name that speaks of God’s power;
His majestic strengths.
Here, when we read the account of God creating man and woman, we are introduced to a new name – the name “Jehovah”. This translation, here in chapter 2, adds the word "Yahweh” to God, so we read, “Yahweh God”.
Jehovah (Yahweh God) refers to two things worth noting. Jehovah refers to the personal God. It speaks of God’s loving, covenant care for mankind.
Isn’t it interesting that as He moves to the account of His creation of man and woman, the name changes? Now the name is not referring to the majestic powerful God, but the loving God, the personal God. You will see Him directly involved in creating man and woman.
Jehovah also refers to the covenant-keeping God.
This is the name that emphasizes God’s covenant with mankind. It is a covenant that is not fragile nor self-centered; it is one that will last forever; it is sacrificing. That is the thought used in this passage, because God created man and woman, knowing they would sin; knowing they would fall. God knew man and woman would need a redeemer. The covenant keeping God still brought them into existence, as if to say, “I will provide a redeemer for you.”
Now, at the end of chapter 2, He will bring man and woman together with the same idea.
The covenant between man and wife should resemble of God to man. It is not fragile, it is permanent; it is not self-centered, it is self-sacrificing. We, as man and wife, represent the covenant that Jehovah God has for His creatures. So, this is a name change that means so much.

Chapter 2 begins on the seventh day of creation. The bible says that God had finished all creation and on this day he rested. If God is as powerful as we think He is, why did He need to rest?
God does nothing without you, His child, in mind.
Maybe God rested, blessed this day, and sanctified it as an example for us to follow. Working every day without a day of rest is really, really hard. God knows you need rest. And He also knows you need time to fellowship with Him. A time to praise and worship Him. He also knows the value of worship and fellowship with other believers.
I know that there are occupations that require individuals to work on the day others have set aside for worship. In this world that we live in, this is necessary. Remember to pray for those that are performing much-needed services. Pray for their safety, wisdom, and the fellowship of God.
There are many people that believe man has to work because of sin. In verse 2 we see that God rested from His....work. God is without sin. In verse 5 we see that God did not let the plants grow because there was no one to till the ground. There was no sin at this time. Man had to work harder after sin came. But originally God wanted man to work and we should honor God in any task that we have to perform.
God formed man from the dust of the ground(2:7). Remember this. We'll see why this is important a little later.
God made woman, Eve, from one of Adam's ribs. Adam knew the importance of his relationship with Eve. Adam said he and Eve were one flesh. Ever wonder about the importance of this? God said the man will leave father and mother and cleave to his wife(3:24) He also said the two shall become "one flesh". Could this be that because he had given up a rib to form Eve, that when the two were united, he would become whole again?
I think that if one believes scripture and they are looking for a reason to believe that marriage is between one man and one woman, this could be a strong argument for that.
This is also instruction for someone seeking wisdom. The wife that you guys are looking for and the husband that you girls are looking for should be one that completes you. You should be able to be one flesh. Only whole when you are together. You should be able to tell each other your deepest secrets and desires because it is as if you were telling it to yourself (one flesh).
